Background on mollydooker
Mollydooker Wines is based in the McLaren Vale wine region in South Australia, and was founded by Sarah and Sparky Marquis in 2006. With a story that catches the hearts of winelovers around the world, global wine aficionado, Robert Parker, wrote about their wines as ‘The greatest red wine values in existence… Run, don’t walk and secure as much as you can of these wines!’
FUN. QUIRKY. PLAYFUL. MEMORABLE. What stands out about these wines, especially across the reds, is the famous “Mollydooker Shake.” This unusual shaking process allows the nitrogen used during their winemaking process to release. Mollydooker uses this nitrogen process to protect the wine and minimize sulphites. Directly from Mollydooker, “…if you think of flavour like a big round ball, nitrogen flattens that ball. So by doing the shake, the nitrogen is released and the flavor ball pops back out to its full size.”
“At Mollydooker, our incredibly talented team is passionate about our motto ‘We make wines that make people go WOW, through attention to detail and commitment to excellence!’ and never take shortcuts or compromise on quality.
We guarantee the quality of their wine by rating it on its Marquis Fruit Weight™ (the measure of how far back on your tongue the velvety sensation of fruit goes). If parcels don’t qualify at the required Fruit Weight, the wines aren’t produced. For example, in the 2008 vintage they only bottled their Lefty wines and in 2015, they only bottled their Lefty and Family wines. This is a true testament to their commitment to quality.
From humble beginnings with a desire to help others when they could, they have never forgotten how they were helped when they were in need. With this is mind, they developed the concept of ‘Sip it Forward’, where a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Mollydooker wines goes back to support the local community, and around the world for those in need.”
— MOLLYDOOKER
THE WINE LABEL AS ART
"The inspiration for the series came from old advertising illustrations and cartoon characters going as far back as the 1920s," explained Roberts. "We also drew upon old books, their covers and inside page patterns. We loved creating the hand-drawn text, including the Mollydooker logos. The idea was to keep everything hand-done, scratched up and fun."
Fun is the operative word for the Mollydooker portfolio. The illustrated labels are by no means "fine art" in the traditional sense of the term, but the traditional sense has been obsolete for decades: Arguably the most important artistic work of Koons—he of the lofty Mouton label and "the most successful American artist since Warhol," as shouted by a recent New York magazine cover—is a shining supersized balloon animal. Mollydooker's Lefty illustrations pick up the mantle of comics and cartoons like Popeye, Blondie and Steamboat Willie, adopting the same knowing wink of a Tex Avery or Chuck Jones character. The Lefty labels may not be think pieces, but they are clever.
